We feel inspired about the students’ creativity during the stand-alone unit of Individual Pursuits. “Mastering basic movement skills ensures body development and conditions performance” is the central idea of this unit. In this unit we’ll build the inquiry and the students’ understanding using the following concepts: “Development”, “Performance”, and “Patterns”.

The Snakes and Safaris had created and performed their first workout! In this clips they show you their own choices and suggestions for a fabulous workout that you can try at home!

We are now using QR codes during the Adventure Challenge unit in Pre 5. I was amazed about how fast my students have learned and how relaxed they are when using technology. I have planned two sessions to practice scanning and they have done it in 10 minutes! We are now getting with one step closer to the summative assessment, when they will have to scan QR codes and overcome a challenge, by teams.

In the PE stand alone unit we are learning how to overcome challenges through communication, trust and an open mind. We have played Clean The Mess game. Students are grouped by teams and each teams is assigned a different task. Team mates decide through a group discussion their roles and responsibilities during the challenge. We end up the challenge with a group reflection with each team identifying the challenges they were facing and  transdisciplinary skills being used.

Currently, in the PE stand alone unit of inquiry, we are learning how basic movement skills enable us to enjoy responsible a variety of activities. We have played the Stepping Stones game. The students had to cross over an imaginary river by stepping on imaginary stones (hula hoops). They did this individually, by pairs and we finally made it successfully with the entire class.

My first post will detail a few essential points of the connection between the subject I teach and the new, challenging environment I am enjoying at the moment. 

In the PYP, physical education is an integral part of the holistic development of a child and forms part of the Personal, Social and Physical Education Scope & Sequence, which guides the planning of what to teach the students in the strands of identity, active living and interactions. 

Together with the Scope & Sequence document, the Essential Elements of the PYP  (knowledge , skill, concepts, attitudes and action) are evident in the PE curriculum, just as they are in all subjects taught here, at SEK Qatar. This approach to the physical education of our students is an authentic way to foster the attributes of the IB learner profile.

There are opportunities to learn about and practice different kinds of physical activity, and these are built into the curriculum and reinforced by the optional Extended Curriculum Activities program.

Physical Education plays a critical role in the school’s mission to assist and develop students into well rounded, global citizens, and this goes beyond student participation  in sports and games. Linking and connecting PE to other disciplines, and showing our students these links, is an important aspect of teaching.
